The Sayan House is a contemporary Asian restaurant located in Ubud, Bali, which we consider as one of the best hidden gems we have ever found so far. On the way to Padma Resort Ubud last time, we stopped by this restaurant and eventually spent hours just enjoying the dishes, the place, and the views.
Finding The Sayan House can be a little tricky because of its secluded location, but if you come using help from GoogleMap or Waze, it should be easy to track. Look out for a small alley on the left if you come from Denpasar/Kuta and the ‘usual’ locations, if you see the signage, turn left immediately. Yes, cars can enter the alley and they have parking spaces available as well.
Our first impression upon arrival was that The Sayan House indeed looks like someone’s house. There is a reception desk in front of the building, and we were greeted warmly by the staff. Apparently, The Sayan House is one of the brands under Plan Do See Japan, a global hospitality brand founded on the Japanese principal of Omotenashi – selfless service with a spirit of warmth and respect. We were very impressed when we stepped into the restaurant because inside, it’s really huge! There are so many dining areas with different ambiances but everything looks very harmonious together.
First they have this main dining area with tropical setting. In the first photo below, you can see there is another smaller dining room behind, that is called “Guest Room”, which is actually a private dining room with seating capacity of 8 person. With minimum charge of IDR 3 millions, that room is all yours.
The bar area looks very pretty especially with the beautiful hanging lamps. We were amazed by their collections of alcohol lines, they must be very serious with their beverages! The moment I saw all the Japanese liquor bottles, I really wanted to bring my father-in-law here and drink together, LOL! XD
Our favorite dining area is definitely the “Veranda”, which is also another main dining area with view of green garden overlooking the Sayan cliff and Ayung River. The veranda area is actually quite big and occupies two levels, complete with rattan chairs and sofas as well. This area in the lower level is much more beautiful because it gets the direct exposure of the garden, and it’s best enjoyed during afternoon when the sun is not that strong anymore. The garden is also available as outdoor dining space during dry season or special occasions.
For family guests who bring children, good news for you because The Sayan House provides a little sanctuary for the kids to play while you dine. Interesting!
The Sayan House opens everyday but the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner only. Between those times, you can still visit for drinks and bites, because the cafe and bar opens all day from 12PM until 11PM. The menu is served a la carte, but during lunch, they provide special lunch course menu with special prices as well.
While waiting for our dishes to be served, we ordered some drinks first. The Sayan House has a lot to offer in term of beverages: non alcoholic or alcoholic, I gotta say they have ’em all. It was still noon that time so we only tried one cocktail which was pretty fruity and mild. What I liked the most is their Homemade Ginger Ale, which has a strong fizz and is an ultimate thirst-quencher in Bali’s weather.
Before the food started coming in, a complimentary bites platter was served. Crunchy “bread sticks” that are shaped like savory biscotti, accompanied with condiments like sambal and mayonnaise salad. Super yummy despite of the simple looks!
Oriental Chicken Salad IDR 95,000
The Sayan House’s signature salad braised with anise and cinnamon aroma bouillon, served with a ginger mayonnaise sauce. Very light and refreshing with fun crunch here and there. I can have this any time of the day and won’t complain about it at all. XD
Fresh Salmon Carpaccio IDR 125,000
Complemented by fresh vegetables and herbs, served with ginger flavored soy sauce vinaigrette. What a beautiful presentation! Fresh, colorful, and so pretty. Japanese are very good in serving raw fish dishes so as expected, the result was spectacular. Not only for the eyes but also for the tongues. The salmon literally melted in the mouth and we felt the umami in every slice. Simply good.
Porcini Royale Soup Consommé IDR 125,000
Presented with a syphon, inspired by the Japanese dish: chawan mushi.
This is like chawan mushi on steroid, with great massive mushroom flavor. I personally love the way they presented this, you can even see the process when they are making the soup broth with syphon, it was very artistic in one sense, and also very practical. The soup was clear but thick in flavor, adding elements to the already-tasty egg custard in the cup. Excellent idea which you probably can only encounter in The Sayan House, so why don’t give it a try? 😉
Babi Guling Sushi
Do you like sushi? We certainly do, and although we are more into original sushi rather than fusion ones, we were very excited upon seeing the word “Babi Guling” (suckling pig). The idea of fusion is always attractive especially if you manage two (and more) different cultures into one, in this case, collaborating a popular local Balinese specialty with what people know as one of Japanese signature dish, sushi.
First of all, presentation was terrific: from the wooden plate, the decorations like banana leaf and the palm-leaves look alike etc. The sushi rice looked very appetizing with beautiful rice grains, while we can see clearly the pork meat were very thick and inviting. The suckling pig itself was very well-seasoned a la Balinese suckling pig, only this one wasn’t spicy at all and probably suits the guests’ taste buds better.
Giant Shrimp & Avocado Rolled Sushi IDR 155,000
Another sushi that we tried there which is highly recommended. We love the gigantic shrimp with extra freshness, and the crunchy sound we made eating this. If you like shrimp or seafood for your sushi, don’t miss it.
Char-Grilled Pork Spare Ribs IDR 165,000
Tender boiled and grilled pork spare ribs with marinated Balinese spices and BBQ sauce. OMG, this was SOOO GOOD I couldn’t stop eating it! The pork was literally tender, I could eat it with no effort at all, and the BBQ sauce was simply finger-licking delicious! There was certain smokey aroma and flavor infused in the meat, and I was pretty much hooked since the first bite. Not to mention the crispy pork skin crackers on top, YUM-OH!!
Australian Wagyu Rendang Penne IDR 155,000
An ode to Indonesia’s most famous dish, rendang. Slowly braised Wagyu in a sauce of ginger, chili, coconut milk and lemongrass.
This was like God of fusion or something, and we are loving it to the max! The penne was well cooked and had a nice chewiness which made it very enjoyable. The wagyu was excellent in term of seasoning and texture, while the rendang was just alright but definitely can be improved. Rendang has a bold flavor that is quite memorable and I didn’t taste it here, but for Japanese tongues, this version of rendang probably works well.
You know, by the time the mains were finished, we already spent more than 2 hours there and we totally lost track of time just because we enjoyed the panoramic views and the place too much. Imagine dining in a restaurant with these kinds of greens around you and you’ll understand why. 🙂
Chocolate Toraja Cake with Homemade Coconut Gelato & Palm Sugar Sauce IDR 65,000
We were surprised to see how dense this chocolate cake was, considering that Japanese usually make their cakes lighter and airy. The chocolate was more into dark category, with strong hint of aromatic bitterness. We fell in love to the coconut gelato, which when eaten together with the cake, it reminded us to one of our favorite chocolate bar: Bounty.
Oma’s Apple Pie and Homemade Gelato With Cinnamon Sprinkles IDR 65,000
Oma means grandmother in English and surely we didn’t want to miss anything (claimed to be) made with grandma’s recipe, right? XD The apple pie looked very stuffy with apple dices and we simply loved the brownish color of the edges. It was warm and soft with crispy crust that was well sprinkled with cinnamon. A taste of homemade pie always wins.
Green Tea Parfait IDR 65,000
Japanese green tea is extremely popular and it’s not for no reason. The green tea parfait here is one of a kind, served in big martini glass, all we saw is the colorful presentation that took our heart away immediately. The green tea tasted just exactly what we expected from authentic Japanese green tea, with distinctive bitterness and strong fragrance. The fruit cocktails and gelato added the natural sweetness that made this parfait simply irresistible.
Lemongrass Panna Cotta with Tuile Biscuit IDR 65,000
Smooth and jiggly panna cotta with amazingly distinctive lemongrass flavor, very refreshing and addictive! Served with beautiful plate, this dessert was very lovely and definitely Instagenic.
As if the whole area is not enough to accommodate your needs, there is also Café & Bar area which is called “Garden Room” and “Living Room”, perfect places to sit back, relax, and enjoy your moments.
Overall, we really had a blast dining at The Sayan House and we totally enjoyed the dishes. With such a homey place to begin with, we think they did really good job with all the menu executions and also the service. If there is another chance, we will definitely come back!
