It’s been less than a month after our last visit to Bangkok and now we are back in this paradise, woohoo! This time we are gonna share about this particular cute cafe/restaurant in Bangkok with special theme of Alice in Wonderland, named The Hatter. This classic story is always interesting to be featured as a theme of anything, but to finally visit and see this place with our own eyes, we were very excited to bring this post to all of you!

The Hatter is located at Sukhumvit 21 area, which is one of the busiest areas in Bangkok, and we usually avoid going there unless we really have something important to do. We used Google Maps to find this place but it was very difficult because the direction was completely wrong. Getting there will be easier from MRT Phetchaburi station or BTS Asoke station, take taxi (or walk) towards the Asoke Montri road, and find the Rutnin Eye Hospital. The Hatter is located just next to the hospital, in the same complex with the Moroccan restaurant, Al Majlis, which is also under the same management.

When we *finally* arrived (it took us about 1,5 hours just to drive around the neighborhood until we finally found this place!), we thought the journey was totally worth it when we saw the pretty decoration of the outer garden seating area. It was around lunch time but nobody was there, even the valet guy wasn’t there. We just parked the car near the valet box and we couldn’t wait to see what is waiting to be discovered inside!

The first thing we saw when we entered the restaurant was this cute little area with so much “madness”, simply awesome! I really could feel the strong ambiance of being in Alice in Wonderland story, I seriously think they do great job in this. PHOTOS!

The restaurant is quite big, divided into some sections but for the dining areas there are indoor and outdoor seating areas, both are pretty spacious with completely different style. While the indoor area looks more elegant, the outdoor area resembles garden with lots of colors. Everything looks perfect except the grass-alike green carpet that they use as “grass”, some parts are not glued evenly so it looks really bad and cheap.

Falling in love to this “clock table” at the first sight! Want one for me too!

Do you get what I meant above? If the grass-alike green wall were made more carefully, it would have been much more beautiful and “real”.

The Hatter offers selection of Western cuisine as well as some Thai cuisine and Asian fusion. The menu is presented on a big framed board, just like a painting/photo covered with glass frame. We forgot to take picture of that, but I think you get the idea. For the drinks, they also have many options from mocktails to alcoholic beverages, and selections of tea or coffee just in case your visit is only for a kind of “tea party” or something like that.

The Mad Dipper THB 250

Minced beef, onion, cream cheese, topped with baked cheese and served with tortilla chips.

For a starter, this was quite fulfilling. We loved the baked cheese with generous minced beef, although the cheese was a bit hardened after a while and it was impossible to dig it in using the chips. The so called “tortilla chips” were more like fried wonton chips, thicker than tortilla chips that we expected. Nevertheless, still enjoyable.

Fried Pork Ribs THB 200

Sweet and savory pork ribs served with fries and spicy Thai dip.

This is also one of the starters menu but looked like a main course to me. The pork ribs were well-marinated (I suppose) and the result was a sweet and savory ribs with super aromatic flavor. We especially love the dipping sauce, a typical sweet, sour, and spicy Thai dip with lots of kick!

Tom Yum Seafood Spaghetti THB 290

For the main course, I opted for pasta and glad they have something with Thai touch to go with it. For the pasta selection, we can choose from spaghetti, angel hair, penne, rigatoni, and macaroni. As you can see, I chose spaghetti because I think it would go well with tom yum sauce.

Presentation was very pretty and colorful. The seafood was also not disappointing because clearly they put quite a lot of stuffs like prawns, squids, mussels, etc. Not only the looks, the taste was also good with flavorful herbs and spices, not mentioning the strong lime flavor that I extremely like from authentic Thai tom yum dishes. Aroi mak mak (very delicious)!

Grilled Salmon Steak THB 350

Grilled salmon fillet with truffle vinaigrette, a simple elegant dish yet so attractive. The salmon was perfectly grilled and seasoned, creating a great balance of crisp, softness, and flavors.

Paint The Rose Red THB 210

As taken from the story of Alice in Wonderland, The Hatter has this cute dessert menu where they will serve a cheesecake in shape of white rose, along with berry jam and a brush.

DSC_0835-copy

Basically we need to paint the rose red (hence the name) by ourselves using the prepared brush. Isn’t it cute? 😉

Too bad the berry jam was too runny so the color wasn’t exactly deep or pretty red like I imagined it would have been, but well, at least it became red eventually, LOL! The cheesecake itself wasn’t too good in term of taste, yet it’s still the most popular dessert in the restaurant. When we ordered it, the waitress kindly informed us that it is “not too good” and recommended us some other ones, but since I already saw that on their Facebook page before I came here, I insisted on ordering this. XD However, it was not “bad”, but you definitely can find much better cheesecakes anywhere else.

The Hatter clearly resembles trending restaurants in Jakarta nowadays with well-decorated places and “just alright” dishes. I bet this kind of restaurant will gain much attention if it opens in Jakarta, imagine the possibilities of youngsters coming and taking photos in every corner of the restaurant. Price-wise, it is considered quite steep as our lunch for two was around THB 2,300 (+/- IDR 900,000 or USD 64). However, we think the place is worth visiting because of its uniqueness and the F&B are also quite good. Maybe a visit when you are in Bangkok? 🙂
