B-side WAKAi is part of WAKAi Shoes stores which sell Japanese inspired streetwear for young people. It is actually cafes that are located close to the stores and serving various Japanese food and drinks. WAKAi stores are available in many areas, including Jakarta, Bandung and Bali. In Jakarta only, there are already 11 stores in total, but not every stores has the cafe. This time, we visited the cafe in Gandaria City, a very tiny cafe with limited number of seating but very nice atmosphere.

Before I continue with my dining experience in B-side WAKAi, let me share something with you. Many people think that WAKAi Shoes is a fashion store originally comes from Japan, but it’s actually NOT. WAKAi is a local brand store under the management of METROX group. And even I myself didn’t know about that because WAKAi stores are always beautifully designed with Japanese themed interior and decoration. Honestly when I found out about this, I was quite surprised because I really thought it is a Japanese brand because of the variety of cute and stylish products they have in their stores. What makes me even prouder is that the products are designed and created by local designers with inspirations of Harajuku-style fashion, one of the most leading fashion area in Japan.
The reason why I did some research about the background of the store was because I am sure that some of the food in the cafe are not very authentic. In other words, the food are very NOT JAPANESE that those really confused me. Before I make you all bored, let’s check them out!
Chicken Teriyaki Don IDR 38K
The first impression about the rice bowl was the tiny portion. Beside that, the chicken cutlets were ridiculously small, too. In fact, it was the first time I saw that kind of “chicken teriyaki”. The chicken were cut into small dices and stir-fried with certain sweet sauce which didn’t taste like teriyaki sauce even a bit. It was quite nice, but it wasn’t chicken teriyaki don, period.

Chicken Katsu Curry Don IDR 39K

Same with other donburi, this was also served in a tiny bowl. The chicken katsu was nice, although the cutlets were incredibly thin. The curry was runny but surprisingly tasted good.

Fish Katsu Curry Don IDR 39K

This was probably my favorite donburi amongst all that we ordered. The dori fish cutlets were thick and fresh, with crispy outer and very smooth, soft fish inside. Loved it.

Japanese Fried Fries IDR 20K

Just regular French fries served very fresh, but was totally tasteless. And FYI, I am not even a fan of salty food.

Rainforest IDR 34K

A blend of avocado, chocolate and coffee resulted in a superb drink! It was a truly nice blends of flavors where I could taste all three ingredients, without being so fed up despite of all the sweetness. Recommended.

Japanese Ice Tea IDR 15K

Strawberry Soda & Mango Soda  IDR 20K each

These drinks were quite nice and there were quite lots of fresh strawberry/mango cuts inside. However, it would be nicer if they put more syrup into those drinks.

Ice Cream Sundae – Chocolate & Green Tea IDR 18K each
Both sundaes were so good and rich in flavors! I especially loved the green tea one, it already looked so yummy even just by looking at it, the rich green color really said it all!

I really like the place, and I really loved some of the desserts. And I didn’t even try some of their signature desserts like the mochi and ninja crepe. So I think I will go back there again some time in the near future just for the sake of the desserts. Although some of the food were quite disappointing, but well, I really had good time in B-side WAKAi cafe. See you next time!
