Established in 1969 as a gyoza specialist, Osaka Ohsho is originated from Japan and nowadays has been known as a popular spot for Japanese-Chinese cuisine lovers. As for today, there are currently over 300 outlets worldwide, including Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, and now, Indonesia.
Located at new Lower Ground level of Plaza Senayan (this area used to be HERO supermarket), the area is quite hidden and doesn’t get much exposure, especially after the area had been under construction for a while. Despite all that, we saw many Japanese workers came here for lunch and that’s a good sign.
Osaka Ohsho, which translates to ‘The King of Gyoza in Osaka’ – is the destination for handmade gyoza (dumplings). Their gyoza is a mixture of cabbage, ginger, garlic and 3 kinds of pork wrapped in Osaka Ohsho’s special wonton wrapper, then skillfully grilled to a deliciously golden brown crisp on one side yet tantalizingly moist within. If we visit Osaka Ohsho’s outlet, eating their gyoza has become a mandatory thing to do!
Pork Gyoza IDR 35,000
First thing first, they have 3 options for their infamous gyozas, including: Pork Gyoza (IDR 35,000), Chicken Gyoza (IDR 35,000), and Prawn & Chicken Gyoza (IDR 40,000). We opted for the pork ones, and each set consists of 5 pieces. The gyoza pieces are plump and beautifully grilled, they have nice crust and super juicy pork inside! I remember we had to argue who could eat the last piece, LOL! You can use the premade gyoza sauce provided on the table or mix your own sauce, we used the premade one and adjusted it to our liking. Although the gyoza are already tasty but dipping them into right sauce makes them even better!
Beside gyoza, Osaka Ohsho also offers variety of Japanese-Cuisine dishes, like stir-fry vegetables and meat, typical Japanese comfort food like Chicken Katsu (IDR 35,000). We actually ordered one and were impressed by the crispiness, but I think we missed taking photo of it because we were too hungry that time. XD
Prices for F&B range from IDR 15,000 to 85,000 only.
Japanese Salad with Apple Dressing IDR 25,000
For appetizer, we tried this refreshing Japanese salad with big serving portion and yummy apple dressing. Mind you, though, if you are not a big eater, it’s best to order this for sharing, otherwise you won’t be able to order anything else for the main course, haha!
Tenshinhan Set IDR 85,000
Another must-try item when you come to Osaka Ohsho is the Tenshinhan! Tenshinhan is a Japanese-Chinese specialty which is an omelette over rice, named after Tianjin in Northern China. It looks cute, round and pretty, served with trademark thick clear sauce. Although it looks simple, once we dug in, we couldn’t stop! The tasty brown sauce goes very well with the simple flavors of egg and white rice, so addictive. It hit us once again that delicious food doesn’t have to be all fancy and glam, but something that makes our hearts warm and happy!
One regular Tenshinhan dish here only costs IDR 40,000 for a guaranteed satisfying portion but if you want more challenge (read: eat more, XD!), try the set menu like we had. Beside the Tenshinhan, you’ll get 5 pcs Gyoza (Pork/Chicken), Chicken Karaage, Egg Soup. The Tenshinhan alone takes a while to finish, but well, you can do it! 😉
Mabo Tofu Tenshinhan IDR 80,000
Whenever we go to Japanese-Chinese cuisine restaurant, Mr. K has never missed ordering his favorite: Mabo Tofu! So can you imagine how happy he is when he found out that Osaka Ohsho offers Tenshinhan with Mabo Tofu? 😉 This stand-alone menu certainly has even bigger portion than the Tenshinhan in the set, they also provided us with 3 small bowls by default, so it means that guests usually order this for sharing. Maybe our photo doesn’t do the judge but the bowl is actually really big and considering the size, it’s really worth the price.
I think not only the portion of rice and egg are bigger, but eating this with massive addition of tofu and tasty broth is really fulfilling. I personally like this one better than the regular one because it has more spices and flavors, more texture because there is meat (we can choose chicken, beef or pork, we opted for pork for sure!) cooked with the tofu. It’s already quite spicy but adding more chili powder will make it even more delicious! MAJOR LOVE!
Maze Soba Pork IDR 55,000
As if everything above wasn’t enough, we ordered one more dish that has been the talk of town recently: Maze Soba. Yes, they have it too, and to be honest, it wasn’t bad at all. The maze soba uses thick, curly noodle, springy and chewy just like what we like. For the amount of noodle compared to the toppings, I think they are very generous with the toppings! Not that I am complaining, though. XD The seasoning was already included in the bottom of the bowl, so make sure to mix everything well before you eat!
Chocolate Cheese Dessert Gyoza IDR 20,000
For the dessert, we tried the gyoza filled with sweets like chocolate and topped with melted cheese. The gyoza was crispy on bites and fulfilled with chocolate, YUM! However, we think it would have been better if they served it to us before the cheese was burned so we could get hot, melting cheese on top of our gyoza. In this case, the melted cheese was already dried out and hardened when the dessert was served on our table.
And as much as I love Osaka Ohsho from only a single random visit, I must state that their tea (Ocha) policy kinda turned us down for sure. They don’t offer free refill for cold/ice tea, but only for hot tea (IDR 25,000). We understand that their price for the food is very affordable, so why don’t make it the same with the drink, at least the tea?
Overall, we had a very pleasant dining experience at Osaka Ohsho, especially seeing such great serving portions they have! So if you happen to be nearby, don’t hesitate to come and give it some try! 😉
